Safety and disclaimers
What Starly is
Starly is an AI. It offers tarot readings for reflection, guidance and entertainment. Readings are not predictions, and nothing in them is guaranteed to happen. Starly does not give medical, mental health, legal or financial advice and is not a substitute for a professional. It does not offer remedies, rituals, mantras or gemstones to treat anything. It is not an emergency service and cannot contact anyone for you.
If you might be at risk
If you are thinking about harming yourself, or you are in danger, please talk to someone now. These numbers are free to call:
| Who | Number | What for |
|---|---|---|
| Emergency | 112 | Police, ambulance and fire |
| Tele-MANAS | 14416 | Free mental health support, any time of day |
| Women's helpline | 181 | Support for women facing violence |
What Starly does when someone may be at risk
- Every message is checked for safety before any reply or reading.
- If a message suggests a risk of suicide or self-harm, abuse, or danger from another person, Starly draws no cards, gives no reading and offers no plan or price. It replies with care and shows the numbers above. If Starly's AI can't reply in time, a fixed reply is used instead, which says "If you are in immediate danger, call 112 now." and asks whether you are safe.
- When Starly isn't sure, it checks in once and offers two answers: "Just a figure of speech" or "I feel unsafe". The second takes the full safety path.
- For a day afterwards, a "Help numbers" button stays at the top of the chat. It opens "Talk to someone now", with "These numbers are free to call. If you are in danger right now, call 112."
- If you try to draw cards you were offered before, you see "For now, let's stay with how you're feeling. The cards will be here whenever you ask for them." Readings come back when you ask for one.
- Nothing more from that conversation is written in your journal, and Starly doesn't use any of it in replies. Anything written before stays in your journal for you, marked.
- We record that this happened and the kind of risk, never your words. That record is deleted with your account. On the landing page, what you write in the box under the helplines is deleted within a day, with your free questions.
Questions about health, law and money
Starly can help you reflect, but it doesn't give advice in these areas, and it never tells you what medical decision to make. Once in a conversation, for each area, it adds:
- "Tarot is for reflection, not medical advice. Please let your doctor guide decisions about your health."
- "Tarot is for reflection, not legal advice. Please let a lawyer guide decisions about your case."
- "Tarot is for reflection, not financial advice. Please speak to a financial adviser before big money decisions."
These notes also appear in Hinglish and Hindi.
What Starly won't do
Starly declines, kindly, to:
- predict when anyone will die;
- pick lottery numbers, teams or winners;
- help hurt anyone (and says "If someone may be in danger right now, please call 112.");
- help with crime;
- get into someone's phone or accounts;
- write explicit sexual content or play that role.
It offers instead to look at what's behind the question.
What we don't claim
- That a reading predicts the future, is accurate, or guarantees any outcome.
- That a message comes from a deity, angels, spirits or the universe as a fact. "Messages from Higher Realms" are short messages Starly writes from the meaning of the card you draw, in the deck's style.
- That anything Starly says can diagnose, treat, cure or prevent an illness, or that a mantra, ritual, gemstone or charm will.
- That anyone is cursed or under black magic, or that something bad will happen if you don't draw again, buy or follow a reading.
- That you should avoid or delay seeing a doctor, counsellor, lawyer or adviser.
- That a person, astrologer or psychic writes your readings, or that Starly is a therapist or professional.
Starly is told to follow these rules, but it is an AI and can get things wrong. If a reply goes against them, please tell us.
Reporting a reply
If a chat reply, reading or Higher Realms message seems wrong or upsetting, use Report beside it. For a daily reading, write through the Contact page. We keep which reply it was and the reason you choose, nothing you type. To tell us more, or to hear back, write through the Contact page.
